What is Primary Focus? +

Primary Focus is the parent's guide to elementary school. It's a resource hub for parents of preschool and elementary-age kids, offering expert guidance, simple strategies, and real-life tools to help your child thrive at school and at home. You can get support through free videos on YouTube, personalized 1:1 calls, interactive livestreams, online workshops, and in-person speaking events. Whether you're facing daily homework struggles or big school decisions, Primary Focus is here to help you feel confident and supported.

Who is Natalie Parmenter? +

I'm a former elementary school teacher with a master's from Johns Hopkins and over a decade of experience working with families and young children. I created Primary Focus to help parents feel confident and supported during the preschool and elementary school years.

Why did you start Primary Focus? +

After years in the classroom, I saw how powerful it was when parents had the right tools. I started Primary Focus to bridge the gap between home and school, and to empower families with practical, joyful strategies.

How is your approach different from parenting blogs? +

I blend real classroom experience with research-backed advice. But more than that, I share the perspective of a former teacher, something that's often missing in parenting spaces. Parents and teachers rarely get a chance to truly talk, and I help bridge that gap. My goal is to show you what actually helps kids succeed at school from the teacher's side of the classroom, so you can support your child with clarity and confidence.

Most of my work focuses on kids ages 3–11, with an emphasis on preschool through 2nd grade.

School Decisions & Readiness

My child has a summer birthday. Should they start kindergarten early or wait? +

This is one of the most common questions I get—and for good reason! The best decision depends on your child's readiness, not just their age. It's a great topic for a one on one check-in call where we can talk through your specific situation and what to consider before making the choice. Reach out if you'd like support.

Should my child do a year of transitional kindergarten (TK) or start kindergarten? +

It depends on your child's social-emotional development and your local school options. TK can be a great choice for kids who need a bit more time before the full kindergarten experience.

What's the difference between preschool, pre-K, and TK? +

Preschool is typically for 3 - 4 year olds. Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) and Transitional Kindergarten (TK) are more structured and often geared toward 4 - 5-year olds as a bridge to kindergarten. The terminology varies by school, so check with them.

What's the difference between public, private, charter, and magnet schools? +

Public schools are tuition-free and zoned by location. Private schools charge tuition and may have different philosophies. Charter and magnet schools are public but offer specialized programs and may have applications or lotteries. Watch my video explaining the difference here.

What if my child isn't thriving at their current school? +

If something feels off, it's okay to explore other options. I help families assess fit and advocate for support. You're not stuck, there are always steps you can take to repair the relationship or find a school that's a better fit.

We're moving to Charlotte—can you help us find the right neighborhood or school fit? +

Yes! I work with families moving to the Charlotte area who want help choosing a neighborhood and school that fits their child's needs. A 1:1 call is the best way to get personalized insight into the local school landscape, zoning, and what to consider beyond test scores. Some realtors even gift a session with me to their clients- ask yours if they'll cover it!

At-Home Support

My child is starting the next grade soon—how can I prepare them? +

I've got you covered! Check out my Grade Level Series on YouTube, where I break down what to expect and how to support your child as they move up. Whether they're heading into kindergarten or third grade, you'll find practical tips to boost confidence and ease the transition.

How do I help my child melting down during homework time? +

Meltdowns usually mean a child is overwhelmed, tired, or unsure what to do. Try breaking the task into smaller chunks, using a timer for breaks, and validating their feelings. Check my tips for homework here and here.

What strategies can I use to encourage independent homework habits? +

Gradually build independence by letting your child take ownership of their routine. Start with clearly defined tasks, offer gentle check-ins, and celebrate small successes. Try coworking with your child!

I don't understand my child's report card / DIBELS test scores. Can you help? +

Absolutely! Report cards can be confusing with all their terms and grading styles. I explain how to read typical report cards and what key areas really matter, so you can understand your child's progress and talk confidently with their teacher.

DIBELS, TRC, MAPS, and iReady scores can be just as confusing. Reach out if you want personalized help breaking it down.
