Homework ruins my day!
Is homework time stressful? Take these tips from a teacher encourage your child to work independently, ask for help without whining, and be time efficient.

Sitting, Waiting, Wishing by Jack Johnson
When I was teaching, one of the top complaints I would hear from parents was that their child would not cooperate during homework time.
Raise your hand if that sounds familiar...
One of the advantages a teacher has, is that they are in charge of a whole class of kids. No matter how much kids beg for it, they know their teacher has limited time to work with them one on one.
You though? They've got you wrapped around their little finger...
So, you need to treat homework time like you're a teacher. Ask yourself- does my child need time to work or do they need help to get it done?
Here's how a teacher would approach homework time:
- Set strict start and stop times. Then share the "agenda," or list of tasks with your child. If your child is a master time waster, use a stop watch to break work into smaller increments.
- Give them help: Settle your child in, get out any supplies, read the directions, and linger for the first 2-3 minutes of work time.
- Give them time to get their work done- walk away or open up something you're working on. Show them that you're busy too, but also available for help.
Keep bouncing back and forth between giving your child time and giving your child help until the work is done.
