Homework has always been a controversial topic. Some camps want to pile on as much as possible. Other camps think it is unfair and should be banned completely.

The fact is, the amount of homework your child has will vary greatly by the school, and even down to the teacher your child has.

But when it comes to homework policies, it feels like parents get left out of the conversation.

So what should you do when it's all too much?

A common complaint I hear in consulting calls is that enormous homework loads are hurting your family's quality of life. And I agree! It's terrible to hear a child getting 2-3 hours of homework a night.

So what should you do?

  • πŸ˜‰ read between the lines: Refer back to class manuals, the school handbook, etc to see what the school's homework policy is. Look specifically to see if homework completion is part of your child's grade. Your teacher may be hesitant to tell you your child doesn't have to do homework, so your answer could lie in the official policy.
  • πŸ“ audit your child: Observe your child's behavior during homework time. Are they truly working, or goofing around? Are they burning out by completing all the easy things first?
  • 🍎 reach out: Email the teacher and explain how difficult it is to get homework done. Ask what the bare minimum is, ask if due dates can be extended, and any other work arounds to reduce the load. Be sure to mention you've been working on solutions at home.

Is this email feeling too close to home? Let's work together to solve the problem. I'lll help you rework your homework routine and draft that email to the teacher. Email hello@primaryfocus.tv for details

🚌 We love the bus!: Bus Driver Appreciation Day is next week on 4/23. I interviewed bus drivers to find out the best gifts to get them. Make sure to leave a comment sharing a memory from your fav bus driver.

🐯 Fascinating: I've been reading 1,000 Amazing Weird Facts with my third grade tutoring students. It's so interesting! Young children will love the pictures and kids about 9+ should be able to read it.

πŸ’„ favorite foundation: Lucky me, my foundation just ran out and its 20% off at Nordstrom right now! This foundation hydrates my skin, includes SPF, and never makes me break out. I wear the shade ivory.

🚰 It worked!: I mentioned a few weeks ago that we had a drip under our sink. I used clear bins to reorganize. I was able to fit several medium sized bins under the sink. I also put this under the sink to absorb moisture. I used to put them around my classroom over summer break to prevent mildew when the AC was off. Game changer!
