The Early Reader Books I Recommend for First Grade

Looking for the best early reader books for first grade? A former teacher shares her top picks to help your child build confidence and strong reading skills at home.
The Early Reader Books I Recommend for First Grade
Bring on the nostalgia! First grade is the year kids can finally read the classics like Cat in The Hat and Junie B Jones

First grade is where reading starts to click.

It’s no longer just sounding out words.
It’s building fluency.
It’s understanding what they read.
It’s starting to feel like, “Oh… I can do this.”

As a former elementary teacher, I’ve seen how the right books can either build confidence or completely shut it down.

These are the early readers and first-grade chapter books I consistently recommend because they strengthen skills without overwhelming your child.

Early Reader Books for First Grade

These are ideal for children who can decode simple text but are still building fluency and confidence.

Pinkalicious by Victoria Kann

Pinkalicious is a beloved series with books written for multiple reading levels. They are high-interest and adorable which is exactly what many first graders need.

Why they work:

  • Cute story lines
  • Simple story structure supports comprehension
  • Engaging characters keep kids motivated

At this stage, motivation is everything. When reading feels doable, kids practice more.

Books by Dr. Seuss

The PERFECT books for first grade!

Dr. Seuss is powerful for strengthening:

  • Phonics patterns
  • Sound blending
  • Reading with expression

Books like Hop on Pop, Green Eggs and Ham, and of course The Cat in the Hat reinforce short vowels and word families in a way that feels playful, not academic.

National Geographic Kids Early Readers

Not every first grader wants stories. Some want facts.

These nonfiction early readers are excellent for:

  • Building vocabulary
  • Strengthening comprehension
  • Introducing text features
  • Supporting science learning

They will still need support to get through it, but the pictures will have your child highly interested. If your child lights up talking about sharks or space, lean into it. Interest drives stamina.

Nonfiction Books by Gail Gibbons

Gail Gibbons writes clear, structured nonfiction that’s accessible to first graders. If your child is obsessed with a specific topics like horses, sharks, or dinosaurs, then they will LOVE these books.

These books:

  • Build background knowledge
  • Strengthen academic vocabulary
  • Support classroom learning

Early Chapter Books for First Grade (Read Together)

Some first graders aren’t ready to read chapter books independently — but they are absolutely ready to listen to them.

Listening to longer stories builds:

  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension
  • Attention span
  • Story structure awareness

Ivy + Bean by Annie Barrows

Funny. Relatable. Engaging.

This series builds:

  • Social understanding
  • Character analysis skills
  • Listening stamina

Perfect for first graders who are starting to navigate friendships more independently.

Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park

First graders love Junie B. Jones!

The humor keeps them hooked, and the real-life school scenarios spark great conversations.

No, the grammar isn’t perfect.
That actually makes for wonderful teachable moments.

What First Grade Readers Really Need

At this stage, your child needs:

  • Books they can read successfully
  • Books they’re interested in
  • Opportunities to reread
  • Someone who listens without correcting every word

Happy Reading!
