Let's talk about summer babies...
Kids born in the summer and early fall end up in a funny predicament. Based on school cut off dates, they will either be the youngest or eldest in their class.
This is a huge decision parents must make. The difference between a five and six year old is enormous. And when you're young, age can feel so important. This is why people ask me:
Will my child be bullied if they enter kindergarten at age six?
Do you have questions about your rising kindergartner? Let's set up a 30 minute call! email hello@primaryfocus.tv to get started.
My short answer: no.
Why? Well at that young age, turning 6 is a major flex! But also students understand, even at a young age, that kids will generally fall between a range of ages. Most will be 5 turning 6, but it's not uncommon to see a few kids in each grade level that are a little younger/older.
While the adults in the room may feel like delaying entry to kindergarten is "holding a child back," the kids won't see it that way. In their eyes, there was no grade before kindergarten, so you can't really be held back. 😅

🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 Nex Benedict: I want to take a moment to honor Nex Benedict. Nex, a non-binary teenager from Oklahoma died last week after a fight in the school bathroom. Our LGBTQA+ youth are so vulnerable, I want a future where all children can go to school and express their identities. This starts with us, the adults in the room. Teen Vogue has a great article about using they/them pronouns and StopBullying.gov has advice on how adults can create safe environments.
🎥 Kids & Screens: My interview with The Game Educator is up! We talked about imposing natural limits on screen time, reframing guilt adults feel around it, and what to do if your child is spending too much time online. If you have time, please leave a comment on it today.
🎙️ March Livestream: This Saturday 3/2 at 10am join me for my March Livestream. It's Q&A with a teacher. I always give questions from newsletter subscribers first priority!
Things I Love (contains affiliate links)
🌺 Fancy Pants: A few years ago I stopped wearing shorts. They really drive me crazy lol. Instead I filled my wardrobe with flowy skirts and fancy pants. I just snapped up these $25 ones (size down!) that are perfectly lightweight.
☕️ Cafe Vibes: This time of year I want my home to feel cozy and warm. I burn this vanilla pound cake candle nonstop. This company's candles are fragrant and leave my home feeling like a cafe.
📓 Kids love these: I don't know what it is, but kids love workbooks! I always give these Highlights workbooks as gifts. They have fun illustrations and bonus activities, but are also pretty rigorous. They have them for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.
