5 Things Charlotte Parents Need to Know About the CMS School Choice Lottery 2026 (Magnet Schools)

Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools have a robust magnet program. These schools are public schools with specialty programming. Instead of assigning students based on their address, students enter a lottery.

With everything from free Montessori School to STEAM Academies to Dual Language Immersion (your choice of 5 languages!) - programs that would otherwise cost you thousands in tuition

But if you’re looking for next school year 2027-28, you need to take action now.

CMS’ Elementary Magnet Schools are open to all district students.

Some middle and high school levels may require auditions and / or GPA requirements to attend.

As a former kindergarten teacher at a popular magnet school, I remember seeing the relief on parents' faces after an almost year long admissions process. Today I run the Kindergarten School Talk Workshop to help families navigate their elementary school options.

Here are 5 things you should know if you’re applying to the CMS School Choice Magnet Lottery in 2026:

1. Great Choices are Everywhere

Does Charlotte have good schools?

It’s easy to get fixated on the most popular schools, but there are great options all over Charlotte, NC. In most cases there are multiple campuses following the same magnet theme.

I always recommend families start their search with schools close to their home or workplace.  Charlotte has great schools in every corner of the county- don’t be a hero driving 45 minutes each way to drop your child off.

Pro Tip: Consider the bell schedule for the school (shown on each CMS school’s homepage). Your childcare needs will change drastically for a school day that ends at 2:45 pm versus 4:15 pm.

2. Know your CMS Transportation Zone

How do you find out your CMS transportation zone?

In order for CMS to provide bussing for your child, you need to attend a magnet school in your Transportation Zone.

To find your Transportation Zone, look up your assigned high school (sites like Ryse and the Geo Portal will tell you). Then check here to see if your high school is in the violet, blue, or green zone.

If you’re interested in a school outside your transportation zone, you can still apply, but your kids will not qualify for bus service. Applicants in the transportation zone will be prioritized in the lottery.

3. How to register for the CMS School Choice Lottery (Magnet Schools)

How do you enter the CMS School Choice Lottery?

If you’re reading this…it’s time to get started! This year, the magnet lottery for the 2027-28 school year ends on December 11, 2026.

  • Step 1: Register your Child for the ‘27-28 school year (registration window: October 19 - December 1, 2026).
    • Keep an eye on your inbox for an important email with your child’s Student ID number. This can take up to two weeks (check your spam folder). Write their Student ID number down- you’ll need it through twelfth grade.
    • If your child currently attends CMS you can skip this step.
    • If your child has a CMS student ID, but aren’t currently attending a CMS school, you will need to re-register them.
  • Step 2: Once you have your Student ID number, create your Lottery Account
  • Step 3: Choose your 3* schools and submit between November 2 - December 11, 2026.
    • It does not matter what day you submit your choices.
    • You do not need to rank your choices. Each school has its own lottery individual from the others. This was different prior to 2025.
    • *Note: some families will be given up to 6 options based on school performance.
  • Step 4: January 5, 2027: Lottery Results are shared.
    • You will either be admitted or waitlisted at each school. It can be any combination of admitted / waitlisted (for example admitted to 2 and waitlisted at 1).
    • If you’re admitted, you will have 5 days to accept your seat
  • Step 5: If you’re waitlisted, decide how long you’ll wait. Schools will pull students off the waitlist though August.
    • My suggestion is to decide by the end of May so you can make arrangements for bussing and child care.

4. You’re Set Through High School

Almost every magnet school has an elementary, middle, and high school that follows the theme. So if you like the program, you can continue to opt in from Kindergarten through senior year. The one exception to this is the Leadership Program, this program only runs in elementary schools.

And siblings? They get in too! However this process is not automatic- you must follow the steps to enroll them in CMS and enter the lottery. Don’t forget to do this, otherwise they will be enrolled in your assigned public school.

5. Get on Campus!

When applying to schools it can feel like you’re losing control. But I assure you that you’re still the key decision maker in the process. In my workshops, I help parents pick out elementary schools in Charlotte based on their values, lifestyle, and child’s personality and not get swayed by school popularity.

The absolute best way to narrow down your list is to tour schools. Use The School Tour Tracker to keep track of everything you learn.

Have you ever visited a city to see if you wanted to move there? Maybe visited college campuses? It’s the same thing- marketing and word of mouth can only help so much; you have to get your feet on campus to feel if this is the right match. When you go to an open house you’ll get a feel for the schools’ spirit, magnet theme, homework policy, discipline policies and so much more.

CMS wants your children to have access to these unique programs. If you’re interested I highly recommend you do a little research, visit some schools, and consider the incredible options available to you for free.

In the end only you know what the right placement is for your child, and there are probably multiple places they would thrive! Take pride in knowing you live in a city with a lot of incredible options at your fingertips.
